Men's Soccer Continues To Be Tough at Home

9/7/2016 6:32:00 PM

Box Score With 11 games at Paterson Field this year, the Hamline men's soccer team wanted to make it clear this would be a tough spot for opposing teams to visit.

So far, so good.

The Pipers made it three wins in a row -- all at home -- with a 7-0 decision over Crown Wednesday after noon.

Ben Sorenson scored a pair of goals with Oscar Campbell, Jake Niemann, Adam King, Trevor Lewellen and Ben Pietsch adding singles as HU improved to 3-1 on the season.

The triumvirate of Dean Isaacson, Malachy Zamacona and Peter Griggs combined for the team's second straight shutout. Zamacona, the middle of the three tenders, played 46:25 in goal to earn his first college win.

The Pipers put this one away early. Niemann started things at 8:51, finishing off a three way play with James Reardon and King. Four minutes later, Reardon fed King perfectly and it was 2-0. (Reardon, a sophomore midfielder, leads the MIAC in assists with four.) In an 18-minute span, Sorenson rifled in a pair of goals and Pietsch, who is tied for the league lead in goals, scored for the third consecutive game and it was 5-0 at halftime.

In the second half away, Campbell unloaded on a penalty kick at 53:10 and Lewellen capped the day by deflecting Lucas Bakken-Heck's shot home. Hamline controlled play much of the afternoon, outshooting the Storm 23-6. HU also had a huge 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Pipers have one more prep before opening MIAC play Sept. 14 at Concordia. They travel to Grinnell on Saturday, Sept. 10. The Pioneers are 1-2. They opened the year with a win over Coe College but have lost their last two games to Albion and Dubuque.
