2/11/2017 7:52:00 PM

With considerable help from Cody Jahrig -- and several others -- Hamline tennis coach Julia Courter registered her first collegiate win Saturday when the men's defeated Northwestern (MN), 7-2, in St. Peter. Jahrig had a big piece of the action, winning his number six singles match by a 6-0, 6-1 margin and then teaming with David Yanagita for a win at number three doubles, 8-2. The latter was part of a doubles sweep that saw the number one tandem of Matt Seracki/Mark Johnson take a 9-8 (10-3) decision and the number two duo of Ben Klimek/Gabriel Guarin succeed by an 8-3 count. Johnson, Seracki and Guarin also won their singles matches as well for HU.

Earlier in the day, Jahrig scored a victory at number six singles in an 8-1 loss to perennial power and conference favorite Gustavus Adolphus. It was the first HU triumph of any sort over a Gustie in five years. Johnson, a freshman, nearly won as well, losing a three-set match at number three. Seracki also put up a great fight before falling 6-4, 7-5. Guarin fell by 6-4, 6-1.

Hamline will take a 1-1 record into a match against St. Olaf on Friday, February 17 against St. Olaf in Owatonna. The match begins at 6:30 p.m.
