Box Score A week ago, a return trip to the MIAC playoffs seemed improbable to Hamline's men's soccer team. Now, if the Pipers can get some help from Carleton on Saturday, improbable will turn into reality.
Seif El-Fatairy and
Dean Isaacson (pictured) shared the limelight Tuesday as Hamline handed Gustavus Adolphus its first MIAC defeat of the season, 1-0, in St. Peter. The victory, just the third ever for the Pipers in 65 men's soccer games against the Gusties, vaulted them into sixth place -- the final playoff spot -- in the MIAC with a 4-5-1 league mark (7-6-1 overall). The Pipers have a one point lead over St. John's (4-5) and also own the tiebreaker because of that 2-0 win at Paterson Field last Saturday. A Carleton win or tie against the Johnnies would send the Pipers against the number three seed in the playoffs on Tuesday, October 30.
El-Fatairy supplied the only offense HU would need when he converted a penalty kick at 37:32. The sophomore is now 2-for-2 in such shots.
Isaacson took it from there. The senior recorded a career high 15 saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season and 17th of his Piper career. He was particularly busy in the second half, batting away 12 Gustavus Adolphus shots, including a pair in the last two minutes of play.
Having done their part, the Pipers will wait and watch anxiously as the Johnnies play the Knights in Northfield Saturday.
