Senior Spotlight: Abigail Van Goethem

Despite having their seasons cut short, the Hamline athletic department would like to recognize and honor the 2020 senior spring class of student-athletes. These 37 individuals have made a lasting impact on their program and the Hamline campus as a whole. Abigail Van Goethem   |   Track and Field   |    Biology Major
Abigail Van Goethem has been a four-year contributor to the track and field team, scoring in at least one event for the Pipers in all seven MIAC Championships that she has competed in throughout both the Indoor and Outdoor seasons. During her career she has earned three MIAC All-Conference awards as well as being named to the MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention Team eight times. All three of her All-Conference awards were earned in the Triple Jump, where she placed second at both the 2018 Indoor Championships and the 2019 Outdoor Championships. She added a third-place finish in the event at the 2019 Indoor Championships. In total, Van Goethem has scored in six different events at the conference level - triple jump, long jump, 400-meter hurdles, javelin, 4x400 relay, and 4x200 relay. Van Goethem is a two-time MIAC All-Academic honoree and is also involved with Hamline Initiative for Professional and Academic Liaisons (HIPAL) and the honor society Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK).
 
What were you most looking forward to for this spring season?
I was looking forward to traveling to Arizona with my team and especially competing in javelin this year.  
 
What is one of your favorite memories of your time at Hamline?
My favorite memory at Hamline was finishing the strongest we ever have in school history as a team at the 2019 Indoor Track and Field Conference Championships.
 
Who is someone that has had a positive impact on you during your time as a student-athlete?
My javelin coach, Josh Blaschko.
 
What is your advice for your younger teammates?
Enjoy the time that you have with your teammates and coaches. You may not realize it now, but you will miss the hard practices, the hectic schedule, and constantly being sore.
 
What are you most proud of about your career as a student-athlete?
I am proud of the amount of hard work I have put in over the past four years. It wasn't always easy, but it was so worth it.
